Bavarian 1806

General Adjutants and General Staff

General Adjutant of Infantry.

The General Adjutant of Infantry wore, from 1804, red facings on the pale blue coatee. The aiguillettes, buttons and lace on the collar plus the lace loops on lapels and cuffs were gold. The turnbacks were red while white breeches and black cavalry top boots were worn. The black bicorn was edged gold and was decorated with a white feather edging to the top of the bicorn; a white piume with a pale blue base was also worn attached to the bicorn. An infantry officer's pattern sword was carried, suspended from a silver, backed red belt; a pale blue line passed through the silver. The collar bore General's lace.

General Adjutant of Cavalry.

The General Adjutant of Cavalry wore the above uniform, but with all lace, buttons, aiguillettes etc., of silver; also a cavalry sabre was carried on the silver, red and pale blue belt, in place of the infantry sword. General's lace was worn on the collar as above, but in silver.

Flugel Adiutant

The Flugel Adjutant wore a similar uniform to the General Adjutant of cavalry but without the cuff lace and white feather edginy to the bicorn. A cavalry sabre was carried. The collar was decorated with silver rank lace, not General's lace.

General Staff (Generalquartiermeisterstab)

The General Staff wore the pale blue costee with collar, cuffs and lapels of violet, piped red while the turnbacks were red. The lapels and cuffs were decorated with silver lace loops; each loop had a silver tassel on the end. The collar had silver rank lace. The bicorn was edged silver with a white over pale blue plume but without the white feather edging to the top of the bicorn. An infantry officer's sword was carried. Aiguillettes and buttons were silver.

Before1804 General Adjutants of Infantry and Cavalry wore the pale blue coatee with black collars, lapels and cuffs while the turnbacks were red. It is possible that when on campaign General Adjutants, Flugel Adjutants and General Staff officers would wear grey cavalry overalls: these would probably be fitted with red stripes and buttons, the buttars would perhaps be as on the coatee, gold or silver. By c.1815 the bicorn was worn fore and aft and fitted with a hanging white over pale blue feather piume. All Adiutants and Staff Officers wore a silver and blue sash.

The colour plate illustrates, from left to right: General Adjutant of cavalry, General Adjutant of Infantry, Flugel Adjutant and Major of General Staff. In the background can be seen an Officer and on extreme right a sergeant major of the 6th Chevauleger regiment.

The wash drawing illustrates, on left, a General Adjutant of Cavalry and, on right, an adjutant of the Bavarian Garde du Corps regiment, both of 1815.

Note.

In a coloured engraving by Adam Von Bartsch and Wilhelm Von Kobell which shows, in the background, Austrian and Bavarian Generals, Adjutants etc., the saddle cloths and holster covers of the Bavarian Officers are all red, edged either gold or silver. In this case it would appear that the saddle cloths of the Bavarian General Adjutants, Flugel Adjutants etc., would be red and edged in gold or silver lace to match the lace of the uniform e.g. General Adjutant of Infantry - red saddle cloth edged gold, General Adjutant of Cavalry and Flugel Adjutant - red saddle cloths edged silver. The rear corners of the cloths would have the Bavarian Royal Cypher. M.K. with crown above, the M.K. is surrounded by laurel leaves, the cypher, crown and leaves would be in gold or silver.
